I Was Here

People leave behind marks
So others will know they were here
Etchings in stone and trees
On subway seats
Vandalism justified by the desire to exist
To come back tomorrow to the same spot and say
See, I was here
I’ll believe you if it tell me you’ve lived
You don’t need to prove it
But we desire so strongly to be remembered
To not be forgotten
That the pain of letting go is so strong
The desire to claw my way back into your life
So overpowering
Overwhelming
The feelings inside me screaming
I meant something to you!
And waiting for your emphatic confirmation
But hearing only silence.
